555 Days Towards Level 9000: Day 74.
Time Awake: 7:00 a.m.
The more I pay attention, the more I notice a fine difference between contentment and fun.
I see this in other people, and more importantly I notice it in myself.
Contentment is being content, happy, okay with where you are and what is going on. I get content being out in nature with the birds, spending time with someone who matters to me, taking a walk, reading an excellent book.
Fun is going out the bar, seeing a movie. Fun is loud and distracts the brain from the thoughts that are going on.
We seek fun because we are not content. Often, because the adult life is difficult and adulting is often not enjoyable because we are doing things that we would prefer not to be. Sometimes, adulting flat-out sucks. So pursue fun to shut up all the adulting happening in our brains.
Contentment doesn’t distract the thoughts. Contentment IS the thought process, or: no thoughts at all due to being in the moment.
This is not to say that some things we call “fun” don’t serve for our contentment. That which makes us content and happy are different for each of us. I would say that “fun” is the less accurate word for those experiences.
Seek contentment. Seek yourself. They go hand-in-hand. We know what we want and our contentment lives there.
