555 Days Towards Level 9000: Day 84.
Time Awake: 8:02 a.m.
I watched an interview that Larry King conducted with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the interview, King asks Tyson if he would want to live forever. King emphatically states that he himself would want eternal Life. Tyson laughs, but then states for himself that would not. And then Tyson explains all of the reason he appreciates the limited nature of his earthly existence.
I then posed the same question to myself. Would I want to live forever?
Ego Mike chimed in immediately. “Of course I would! I want to see all the people and do all the things! And I want to go to all the places!”
Then I slapped down Ego Mike and allowed myself to give a real answer. The answer is of course not. No, I do not want to live forever.
If I live forever, then I have all the time in the world. If I have all the time in the world, I won’t actually dedicate my time to doing anything that I want to do.
Yes, I want to meet all the people and watch my niece and nephew grow up to be super old people. But that’s not necessarily how Life works.
People often tell me that I am a passionate person. I am passionate because I am very much aware of the finite nature of Life. So yeah, I’m going to be passionate. I’m passionate about all the things I do, all the ways I spend my time. I’m passionate about the people I interact with, this project that I’m doing right now, the things that I write, the food that I eat (moreso now than any time before).
This is the beauty of the finite Life. Put yourself fully into all the things you do. If you’re going to Love, Love hard. If you’re going to laugh, laugh like a lunatic and have an amazing time. If you’re going to run, run to your heart’s content. If you’re going to sit in the sun all day, do so — but with sunscreen applied. Seriously.
Whatever it is you’re doing, whatever your passion is, whatever it is that you just want to do with your Life, it’s that much sweeter because you only have so long. There is no guarantee that you’re waking up tomorrow.
Enjoy this Life. And LIVE.
I’m doing my best.
